CAUSES OF CAMERA LENS SCRATCHES

Ignorance they say is a disease, and therefore cannot be an excuse for not knowing the implications of having your camera scratched. Camera lens scratches can greatly affect your camera and hinder your photography productivity.

Being mindful of these various causes of camera lens scratches as they can help photographers take the necessary precautions to protect their valuable camera lenses from scratches and damage.

Some of the causes of camera lens scratches include:

1. STORAGE ISSUES:

Storing the lens without a protective case or pouch can allow it to rub against other items and get scratched. Also storing it in a place with extreme temperature like storing lenses in high humidity or damp conditions can cause the lens coatings to degrade over time, making the surface more susceptible to scratches. Exposing lenses to very hot or cold temperatures, like leaving them in a car, can cause the lens materials to expand and contract, potentially cracking the surface.

2. IMPROPER CLEANING TECHNIQUES:

Using the wrong type of cloth or cleaning solution, or wiping the lens too aggressively can create fine scratches over time. It is advised to make use of certain materials such as microfiber cloths, lens cleaning tissues, lens cleaning pens, cotton swabs et cetera, and of course with some specialized chemicals. It’s important to avoid using regular paper towels, facial tissues, or clothing fabrics like cotton, wool, or polyester, as these can be abrasive and leave behind tiny scratches on the lens.

The key is to use only the softest, most gentle materials designed specifically for cleaning delicate optical surfaces. Proper lens care and cleaning technique is essential to maintain the clarity and quality of your camera lenses.

3. CONTACT WITH HARD OBJECTS:

Accidentally bumping the lens against a hard surface like a table, counter, or other objects can directly scratch the lens. It is important to always keep your camera well protected inside your camera bag with proper padding when it’s not in use.

4. MANUFACTURING DEFECTS:

In rare cases, the lens may have microscopic imperfections or flaws from the manufacturing process that can develop into visible scratches. Always make proper research before you choose a brand or a company to purchase a camera, and return immediately if the camera or item is defective.

5. IMPROPER LENS CAP USAGE:

Putting the lens cap on or taking it off carelessly can cause the edges of the cap to rub against the lens and create scratches. This is caused by the irresponsible actions of the owner whereby he/she handles the piece of equipment carelessly. This could lead to the untimely breakdown of the camera.

6. EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS:

Certain chemicals like sunscreen, insect repellent, or other substances can react with and degrade the lens coating, leading to scratches.
